We believe that becoming part of a church family is a significant decision that should not be taken lightly. Membership in a healthy, local church can be a wonderful blessing, but it is a commitment. As a member of Malvern Hill, you commit to a spiritual family that provides care, encouragement, accountability, and support for one another centered around God's Word.

At various times throughout the year, we offer a Next Steps class where people who are interested in church membership can discover what it means to become be part of Malvern Hill. This is an informal discussion with opportunities for questions and dialogue. We want to be open and honest as a church family about what we believe and how we work together as a church for the glory of God and the advancement of His kingdom. We also want to take time to get to know you, your gifts and passions, and how God is working in your life.

Some of the questions that will be covered during the class include:

"What does the Bible say about the local church and church membership?"

"Who is Malvern Hill and what do we believe?"

"Why should I become a member of Malvern Hill?"

What does a member of Malvern Hill look like?"

"What are ways that I can get involved in the life of the church family?"

Resources on Church Membership

Here are some resources to help you:

  • Questions about the Church - This FAQ sheet was published as a part of our "The Church is..." LifeGroup curriculum. It covers questions like: What is a church? Is church membership in the Bible? Why is membership important? and What does meaningful membership look like at MHBC?
  • "Hope for the Church" by Dr. Tim Keller - In this sermon, Dr. Keller teaches from Hebrews 10:19-25 and shows how the Bible calls us to do more than meet with other Christians in a specific building once a week. Instead, God calls us to experience transformation through community.
  • Spiritual Gifts Survey - This questionnaire by LifeWay Christian Resources can help you identify the ways that God has equipped you to serve His Kingdom and the church family.
  • How Can I Disciple Other Christians? - This blog article lists thirteen (13) practical ways that we can disciple one another within our church. Discipleship is more than listening to a sermon or a lesson, it is intentional community that is rooted in God's Word and the gospel.
  • Unity in Diversity - As we seek to live as a church family, how can we distinguish between what is essential, what is a conviction, and what is a personal preference? In this article, Jen Wilkin helps navigate the waters of disagreements and Jesus' commands towards unity in the church.
  • Disillusionment with the Church - When we misunderstand the true nature of gospel community, we are bound to be disappointed. When we understand that our community is built upon Christ and not common interests, the result is a deep relationship that allows true sacrificial service towards one another.
